Eyelid surgery, medically known as blepharoplasty, addresses eyelid sagging caused by aging and genetic factors while improving the field of vision. It remains one of the most requested facial procedures among Ankara patients.

What Is Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin, fat and muscle tissue from the upper and lower eyelids, giving the eyelid a firmer, more refined appearance. It improves the field of vision and removes the tired expression that excess eyelid tissue can create.

Eyelid surgery is the procedure we use to remove the fat pockets that build up in the upper and lower eyelids as we age. After the operation, patients gain a wider field of vision and, at the same time, a more youthful appearance than before. Prof. Dr. Esin Yalçınkaya

Why Do Eyelids Sag?

Skin elasticity generally decreases with age. Genetic predisposition, muscle weakness and fat accumulation also play a role. Eyelid sagging can cause both aesthetic concerns and a narrowed field of vision.

Eyelid surgery is most often recommended for people over 35. That said, younger individuals with a genetic predisposition to the condition can also be good candidates. Noticeable sagging, under-eye bags or a persistently tired expression are the main signs that surgery may be worth considering.

Check Yourself

  • Sagging at the outer corner of the eyelid or a deepening crease line
  • Noticeable excess skin around the eyes
  • Pronounced puffiness in the lower eyelid
  • A sense that your field of vision has narrowed

How Is the Surgery Performed?

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is carried out under local or general anesthesia. The operation typically takes 30 to 50 minutes. Excess skin and fat tissue are removed to achieve a more youthful, rested appearance.

Because incisions follow the eyelid's natural crease lines, the resulting scars are largely unnoticeable once healing is complete.

Preparing for Surgery

What to Keep in Mind For 2-3 weeks before surgery, blood thinners, alcohol, tobacco products and herbal teas that increase bleeding risk should be avoided. Not following these guidelines can raise the risk of bleeding during surgery and affect the recovery process.

Recovery Process

  • Mild swelling and bruising in the first few days is normal
  • Swelling and bruising typically resolve fully within 1-2 weeks
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes
  • Avoid strenuous exercise
  • Protect the area from direct sun exposure

Frequently Asked Questions

Is blepharoplasty the same thing as eyelid surgery?
Yes, blepharoplasty is the medical term for eyelid surgery. It can address upper eyelid sagging, lower eyelid bags, or both together.

Is blepharoplasty performed for aesthetic reasons only?
No. Severe upper eyelid sagging can narrow the field of vision, which turns the procedure into a functional necessity. Functional blepharoplasty can be planned following a doctor's assessment.

Does blepharoplasty leave a visible scar?
Incisions are usually placed within the eyelid's natural crease line, so the resulting scar is largely hidden once healing is complete.
